Most buildings that were built 10 years or more ago have hundreds of pounds and thousands of feet of cabling abandoned in the ceilings, risers and plenums. Changes were made in the 2002 National Electric Code ( NEC ) that may now render your property out of code, jeopardizing your fire insurance. The new rules make it a violation to have abandoned wires in the building’s risers or plenums. This is in addition to the common problems of sagging & congested ceilings. Removing abandoned cables must be done with care, as to not disturb active cabling and things such as electric lights, sprinkler systems and other devices that are in place within the designated area’s.
